Welcome

Every person deserves a life with dignity, purpose, choice and connection.

Steady Compassion is an adult intellectual and developmental disability support agency. We provide In-Home Respite Care, Community Living Supports, Independent Living Skills Training, Community Integration, Companion Services, Family Caregiver Relief and specialized High-Acuity Support.

Our mission is simple. We walk alongside individuals and families with reliable, compassionate, individual support that helps people gain independence and a better quality of life.

Every person has their own story, their own abilities, their own challenges and their own dreams. Our job is not to decide what someone can become. It is to build the encouragement and the support around them so they can get there.

Every support plan begins with one question What matters most to this person?

Who you are calling

We are new, and we would rather say so.

Steady Compassion was started by a family of healthcare providers. Between us we have spent years in clinical settings where things move quickly and the person in the bed gets excellent attention, and we were good at that work.

What stayed with us was what happened after. Someone goes home, the door closes, and the whole weight of their care lands on one person in that house. Nobody ever asks how that person is doing, and the discharge still gets counted as a success.

So we built the other half. Clinical training brought into the living room, one Direct Support Professional who keeps coming back until they know your household, and somebody finally paying attention to the person doing the caring.

Exactly where we are today

  • Founded by working healthcare professionals. That is who answers the phone.
  • Insurance is in progress. We will not take a booking until it is in place.
  • Background checks are being completed. No caregiver works a shift before theirs is done.
  • The first visit to your home is free. No commitment either way.

Ask us for proof of any of this before you commit to anything. We would rather lose a week of business than have you take our word for it.

What drives us

Our mission and our vision.

Our mission

Person centered support that builds real independence.

To provide services that promote independence, inclusion, safety and personal growth for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Our vision

A future where every person has the chance to thrive.

To become a trusted name in I/DD services by setting a higher standard of support, built on compassion, accountability and doing the work properly.

  • Direct Support Professionals respected as skilled professionals
  • Technology that makes communication clearer for families
  • Support designed around each person's own goals

Our services

Seven forms of support, built around one person at a time.

From a few hours of relief through to specialized behavioral care. Every plan starts with a free conversation and a visit, so the support fits the person rather than a template.

What guides us

Our core values.

Seven commitments we hold ourselves to, and that you are welcome to hold us to as well.

1

Dignity and respect

Nobody is defined by a diagnosis. People come first, with dreams, preferences, strengths and the right to make their own choices.

2

Person centered support

Care built around the individual, not a schedule or a checklist. We start by learning goals, interests, communication style, strengths and culture.

3

Independence and confidence

The goal is never dependence on us. It is skills in daily living, decision making, communication and self advocacy. Small wins become real milestones.

4

Compassion and reliability

Families trust us with someone they love. We honour that with consistent communication, dependable staffing and following through on what we said.

5

Excellence and accountability

Proper documentation, ongoing staff training, ethical practice, and measuring outcomes so we can show our work rather than just describe it.

6

Inclusion and community

Everyone deserves to take part fully. We help people build friendships, explore interests and experience belonging.

7

Always improving

Secure digital tools, better communication with families, and honest review of how we are doing, so the service keeps getting better.

Inclusion and community

Everyone deserves to take part fully.

Friendships, interests, confidence and the ordinary experience of belonging somewhere. That is what community integration is actually for.

How it begins

Unhurried at the start, so nothing is rushed later.

Four steps, and you can stop at any of them. The first two cost nothing at all.

An introduction

A call or a note telling us about your family and the kind of support you are looking for. No pressure and no commitment.

A visit to your home

We come to you and learn the routines, the preferences, the support needs and the rhythm of the household. Free, always.

A considered match

We choose a Direct Support Professional suited to the person's needs and temperament, and introduce them properly before anything starts.

Support that adapts

Regular visits or occasional relief, adjusted whenever life shifts. The same familiar face wherever we possibly can.

Where we serve

Rooted in the Triangle.

We currently serve families across five counties. If you are just past the edge of that list, ask anyway, because we can often help.

Questions families ask

Straight answers.

Will your staff actually understand how my son communicates?

That is the first thing we learn, before anyone is booked. At the home visit we go through how he communicates, what he is telling us when he does particular things, what helps and what makes it worse. It goes into his plan in writing, and the Direct Support Professional reads it before the first shift rather than working it out on the day.

We have had support workers before who just sat on their phone.

We hear this constantly, and it is the fairest criticism of our industry. It happens when nobody agreed what the visit was actually for. Yours has a written plan you approved, with the specific goals and activities for that session, and you get a short note afterwards telling you what happened and how it went. If that stops happening, tell us and we will fix it.

My daughter does not do well with new people.

Most people do not, and being handed a rotating cast of strangers makes it worse. So the introduction happens before the first shift, in your home, with you there, and it goes at her pace. We keep the same person wherever we possibly can, because consistency is the whole point. If the match is not right, say so and we will bring someone else.

He has behaviors. Are you going to give up on him?

No, and we would rather talk about it openly than have you hide it and hope. High-acuity behavioral support exists precisely for complex needs: staff with specialized training, a proper behavior support plan, crisis prevention strategies, and structure that makes things predictable. Tell us the hard parts at the first conversation so we can staff it properly from the start.

How does the funding work, and can we afford this?

In North Carolina, adult I/DD services are commonly funded through Medicaid, including the Innovations Waiver, and through state funded services arranged by the regional managing organisation. Private pay is also an option. We will go through what you may qualify for on the first call, what documentation you would need, and we will tell you honestly if another route would serve you better than us.

What happens when our regular support worker is off sick?

You get told promptly, not left waiting at the door. Where we can, we send someone who has already met your family and has read the plan. Where we cannot, we will say so plainly rather than sending a stranger unannounced, so you can decide what works for you that day.
